How the factory works

Every object here began life on a piece of circulating 1990s media — a clip-art disc, an office suite, a shareware CD — before it was recovered for this catalogue.

Each recovered image is converted into a modern file and entered into the catalogue under a permanent accession number.

Where the same image turns up on more than one disc, as it often did, the copies are catalogued together and de-duplicated so that only one stands on display.
