Provenance

The SoftKey ClipArt Ultimate Collection, 1996 — and the collection whose name the catalog most directly tests. Of its roughly three thousand catalogued accessions, only about half survive canonicalization: the rest are duplicates, many of them the very same images already issued on the 1994 PC Paintbrush disc from the same corporate estate. "Ultimate" describes the marketing, not the contents. The publisher's own history explains the padding. SoftKey Software merged with WordStar and Spinnaker in early 1994 to form SoftKey International; it then acquired most of The Learning Company in December 1995 and, in October 1996, renamed itself after the company it had bought. The assets later scattered — to Mattel, to Gores Technology Group, and onward to Ubisoft and Riverdeep/HMH — with no single successor clearly retaining the clip art. A library assembled by consolidation, resold under a superlative, and then dispersed by the same forces that built it. The archive keeps every copy and displays one, which is the most honest description this collection has ever had.

Disclosure
Publisher: SoftKey (per the source item), the estate that also issued the 1994 PC Paintbrush disc. "SoftKey" has not existed as a brand since its 1996 rename to The Learning Company; assets later dispersed across Ubisoft and Riverdeep/HMH with no confirmed clip-art rights-holder. No rights are claimed by this archive.
